Seems like 75% of high schools use the logo of a college or professional team.

They usually don't give a crap.

This used to be true.

But UT is very pretentious so this story isn't surprising.

If you don't vigorously protect your trademarks you lose the right to protect them in the future. Universities have really stepped up on protecting their marks in the last 15 years or so. I'm surprised it took UT this long. I believe most of these High Schools were hit about 10 years ago.

But there is so many, some not even close to where the University is located (For example, a school in MS I recall had a different colored Michigan helmet/Hattiesburg was notoriously LSU's logo just with HHS instead of LSU). It takes time for them to find them.

My old high school North Vermilion uses the Patriots logo. Also St. Thomas Moore in Lafayette uses Penn State's oval Nittnay Lion logo. Always wondered how were they allowed to do that

Yep.

But I thought college and pro teams had a system where a high school got to copy them for a token fee of $1 a year. That way the players can feel like they're playing on a bigger stage, the logo owner gets free advertising, and the use is for a legitimate purpose instead of some random person stealing it for profit.
