Then look at the trailers for the reboots, you don't even have to see the movies to know it's not the same universe.

It's not just age or dumbing down Star Trek for teenagers...the vibe and approach is 100% different.

Audiences tastes have changed. Star Trek had to modernize (and get away from the niche fans who love them some Klingon politics) to survive as a franchise. It was more then successful. As I recall 2009 made more then any other Star Trek film (adjusted for inflation) and Into Darkness for all it's flaws is number 2.

What passed for decent stories at the theater in the 50s isn't going to work now....

Frankly, television does a better job telling decent stories then any film anymore and Star Trek is so much better on TV then it has ever been in the theaters...but that an entirely different debate.
