It's the recommended practice... most parking lot accidents happen when someone is backing out of a space and can't see traffic in the lanes around other vehicles because your car/truck's back end is sticking out first... so if you back into the space while you can see other traffic, you can just pull out of the space without having to back out with your vision impaired.

The actual recommended way is to pull through whenever possible so you never have to put it in reverse, but backing in is second best.
