Adding to that point, lots of bassists happen to be versatile musicians as well: Paul McCartney-basically all rock band instruments, John Entwistle-horns, Jack Bruce-piano and harmonica, John Paul Jones-keyboards and strings, Rick Danko-strings, Geddy Lee-keyboards, etc.
