Why? Maybe political fallout resulted from loss to Germany, breeding a virulent form of nationalism, coupled with economic unrest bred by the stock market crash and the Great Depression.

Don't forget the real-time appeal Huey Long had among the discontents and disaffected in those years. Picture him and Charles Lindbergh leading a nationalist populist wave, not unlike a form of authoritarian fascism which we more typically associate with Italy and Germany.
