Yep. And that number includes almost 20,000 dead, most of which fell before lunch!
And for perspective, on that one day, the British lost more men than the US lost in the entire Vietnam War. Let that thought sink in for a moment. And that day was only the start of the Battle of the Somme. The Battle would go on for four months after the bloodbath of the first day.
