If you buy a SIM card at the airport... do you have to have your phone "Unlocked" for it to work properly?

I have an iPhone with AT&T if that matters.

You need to have it unlocked for it to work at all with another carrier. AT&T will unlock for free if your phone is off contract or not on an installment plan. Or you can get it unlocked through eBay if it is under contract. A bit shady but it works. Must do in advance of international travel.

I called AT&T at the airport to ask them this. They didn't seem very sure, even though it was an AT&T SIM card I was looking at for $60. The girl instead talked me into their lowest 30 day international plan for $30. It come with unlimited text and 120mb data - not much data, but if you leave roaming off and only switch it on when needed and get on wifi when possible, it's plenty. I'm on day 6 of a 13 day trip and have only used 17mb so far.
