Praying for you.
I know it is tough.
Kids won't really understand it, so I would keep it as simple as possible. Just say that he's really sick. When he passes away, you can say he's sleeping.
If you're religious, I would say taking a nap in Heaven.
Hang in there. And don't let the ridiculous responses on here make you feel bad. (I haven't read the whole thread, I'm just guessing there are some, cause usually..there are.)
