Corporal is still around, it's just not used much at all. As has already been posted, it's considered an NCO and is usually reserved for someone in a leadership position. I don't know how common or uncommon they are now. But back in my day 80s & 90s they were quite rare. The vast majority of soldiers, including myself went from private first-class (E-3), specialist (E-4), to Sargent (E-5).

Now back in the 50's through the mid-80's there were higher "specialists" ranks going all the way up to "Specialist 9".

E-4 (still used today)

E-5

E-6

E-7

E-8

E-9

Corporal is still used just not that often. It's used when you have gone to the promotion board and will be promoted to E-5. It's basically gives E-4s command over other E-4s. You are technically E-4P (P being promotable).
