A big cat is like any predator, they want to get a meal with the least energy expenditure. They've attacked small dogs, but they generally don't frick with big dogs. They're not looking for a fight, they're looking for easy prey.

Pound for pound, big cats (except cheetas) are the apex land predator. They instinctively go straight for the neck (instant kill). A pit may be more muscular but a cougar would take it out before it could do much damage.
