I work in AR and just asked everyone in my office to name a USA soccer player.
Results:
48 Pele's(yes I know he is not american)
1 Mia Hamm(daughter use to play-i asked)
1 "that crazy lady that beat up her nephew.
1- "that female d@k! thats always on the tv crying about something"
1-"that chick that looks like a dude"
2 messi-again i know he is not american
and wait for it...
1 Sidney Leroux- Yes our one token black guy in office knew who she was from the body issue. although he butchered her last name.

My office is predominantly male, but looking at non-soccer fans. A lot of them are not even sports fans either so haven't seen him for the last 15 years but the Women's team has been on Magazine covers at every check out counter grocery store and most morning talk shows including Oprah.
The Women's team is marketed as sex appeal to men.(even non-sports fans)
Their marketed to Women as empowering.
It is easy to see how more people outside of sports know who the women are versus Landycakes.
