Remember when rock songs had guitar rides in them? I will always view Cobain and Nirvana as the group that killed the guitar ride in rock n roll.

That's the legacy that people like to think of, mainly because they were the first non hair band or pop artist to come through in about a decade.

But if you actually listen to their music, (most of) the songs are poppy, melodic, and have great bass hooks underneath all of the distortion. Cobain would probably be the first to tell you that his music had more in common with the Beatles than Black Flag.
