It wouldn't be preferred, but it's big enough (roughly 200,000) to make it barely tolerable.
The people, in my experience, are generally nice and hospitable.
It can get brutally cold...the wind can really howl through there.
The worst part about Amarillo is the seclusion. They don't have a great airport and You are roughly:
-9 hours from Houston
-7.5 hours from San Antonio
-7.5 hours from Austin
-6.5 hours from El Paso
-6 hours from Dallas
-6.5 hours from Denver
-4 hours from Santa Fe
-4 hours from Oklahoma City
Point is, you better get comfortable being in Amarillo.
