Old school QB's called all their own plays. As offenses got more complicated, the OC's took the playcalling burden off the QB. Manning is so smart and has such a high football IQ that OC's have given it back to him. They may give him guidelines to follow, but he has the authority to change anything at any time. That's not changing the game, however, because very very few can do it and be successful.
