Lafayette is a great town. I'd live here for as long as I can.
Best place to live depends on your budget. If you're younger then on the southern outskirts towards Youngsville and Broussard have a lot of new or newer houses for pretty good prices. If you've got more money to blow than just about anywhere in the Johnston/College/Kaliste Saloom/Ambassador square has everything from new houses to older houses.
ETA: The traffic is not bad. The worse traffic consists of sitting through a couple of red lights. Give me Lafayette Traffic over I-10 Traffic in BR any day.
