A parent has to 'paddle' their child at least once, for them to appreciate the threat of future consequences. The threat in and of itself, is often enough. So parents who have never paddled their child, are essentially positively reinforcing their childs negative behavior. Think of it as getting pulled over for speeding. Which is more likely to get your attention, getting a warning or being issued a ticket?
