Sierra Nevada, New Belgium, and Oskar Blues weren't open when I went up there a few years ago, but there are enough smaller local breweries to keep you busy.

Wicked Weed, Burial, Green Man, Hi-Wire, Lexington Ave. Brewery, and Asheville Brewing, and Wedge are all downtown or close to it. They were all good, but Wicked Weed, Burial, and Hi-Wire were my favorites.

To be fair, I was pretty drunk when we went to Green Man and Lexington Ave. so they didn't get a fair shake.

Also went to a brewery called Altamont a bit out on the West side... great atmosphere but pretty weak beer. I'd skip it if we went back.

French Broad Chocolate Lounge is a must.

If you do go out to Sierra Nevada (right by the airport) then check out Blue Ghost, a newer one also right by the airport.

Sweeten Creek Brewing is another newer brewery near the Biltmore and in the vicinity of French Broad Brewery.
