I've not read this whole thread, but it seems logical to assume we have bases all over the world (and others don't in the US) for the same reason that neither of the World Wars were fought on US soil. We are pretty segregated geographically from recent theatres of war.
Logistically, why would the UK need a base in the US? (the same can't be said for the US in the UK, where in the past eastern europe has been a hot zone, and now the middle east).
