Not at all similar to Gravity in my opinion. Very different tone.
The Martian is like Castaway mixed with Apollo 13, but lighthearted and funny.
Gravity was simply mesmerizing to me. I really got sucked into it and felt the isolation of space.
Gravity does a better job of making you feel what space may be like. The Martian does a better job of making you think "damn, that's a kickass movie",
