When used christmas trees we always started with rebar cemented into and through the bottom off a 5 gal bucket. The piece through the bottom (about 12-18 inches) would stick in mud bottom and keep the tree from getting laid over. The top side part of the rebar was used to as support for the tree to get tied to. We did this because we flipped the trees upside down to allow fish to have that overhead cover. Some we left like that and other we cut off branches, creating more of an umbrella look.
