The Nazis did start out using sealed box trucks modified to pump the exhaust into the back but this proved to be inefficient due to the limited number of people that could be killed at once. They also used trucks and I think generators to pump carbon monoxide into sealed rooms as well. They did this for a while before after some experimentation on Soviet POW's did they learn that using the pesticide Zyklon B would allow them to really ramp up their killings.
