Canada and the U.S. were both going to convert roughly around the same time. Canada did complete their transition in the late '70s, and the U.S. was going to finish several years later...but a global recession hit, so the U.S. postponed the transition until after the recession as a cost-cutting measure--and then never started back up the effort to switch over once the recession ended.
