I hear people say this occasionally, and I don't get it.
If they go to public school, it certainly does . They'd need a lot of crap to surpass $9k/year in daycare expenses alone.

My 7/8 year old isn't playing travel baseball.
"sorry bud, dad thinks it's stupid to spend 4 grand a year driving you around the south to baseball parks when you just learned to tie your shoes, so go play in the sand".

Sure, when they drive and go to college it's going to get significantly more expensive, but that's what savings plans are for.
