Simple. He played inferior teams in a horrible conference. ACC only recently started to show real competition and it's pretty much a 2 team conference right now. A few years ago before FSU went back to being powerhouse you could argue ACC was one of the worst BCS conferences and that was around the time Steele coached there.
You can't compare Steele's defensive statistics to what Chavis did at LSU. It's borderline stupid when you consider the competition they went up against in comparison. Anyone in here already anointing Steele as a better DC than what Chavis did here is fricking stupid. Wait until the season plays out.
You can say all you want that they share similar statistics but they do not tell the entire story. It's also easy to point at general stats that reinforce whatever point you're trying to make but again, don't tell the full story. The only way you're going to know how competent Steele is as a DC is by letting the season play out. Based on history, people have a right to be very reserved about him. I didn't see any major BCS conferences begging him to come be their DC. He has one major stint at DC and he wasn't successful at it. They declined each year under him. You could even argue his time before Clemson was questionable due to how Saban treated him. It's true Saban valued him but probably more for his positional coaching and recruiting ability. Managing an entire defense is a different beast. Luckily, he has a good support group around him. I'm fairly confident Coach O could be a good DC somewhere.

The acc as a conf. Has the 2nd most nfl players and let's not act like the sec full of high powered offenses.
Chavis' defenses benefitted greatly from our offensive scheme. Even in 2014 when our offense was putrid, our defense was rarely on the field because of our ball controlled offense.
When you use pure stats ( yards per play and points per play these stats aren't skewed by TOP) Chavis only had 2 seasons, at lsu, that were ranked in the top 15.
Pure stats are a far better measurement of an offense's and defense's success.
For example, in 2013 our offense was ranked 11th in the entire country in yards per play, but we were 105th In plays ran so our total offensive ranking was 40th.
