I would suggest to leave one person in the boat. First of all for safety. Secondly, they can get the fish off the spear and they move the boat as you dive. This makes it easier so you do not have to swim as far back to the boat. I have been with people that kill the fish and leave it on a stringer as they dive. I would not suggest this because it can get hung up and attract snakes and gators. Last piece of advice is to consider attaching a buoy or life jacket to your gun. You can use it to float on if you cramp up and also you can release your gun with a peace of mind when you shoot. Some guns do float after being shot but they are easier to find if they have a buoy or life jacket attached with a piece of string or rope.

Used to be a lot of good stumps between the parish line canal and laBranche shore line of Lake P but some hillbilly from ponchatoula/bedico with a makeshift barge pulled most of them out
When you do shoot one, get your hands in the mouth or gills as soon as you can
They can shake a slip tip easily with that soft flesh
Dammit I miss shootin those big tabbys...
