The Joe Ledger Series or The Harry Dresden Series.
If your looking for a gradual increase of power over the course of a long series, The Dresden Files is where its at. What I love most about the Dresden Files its not just Harry's ability with magic that has grown throughout the series, but his reputation. He pulls off so much crazy stuff and survives against things he has no business surviving that all the bad guys start to take notice and want no part of him. He's a prodigious wizard, perhaps the most talented of his generation, but he's still young (for a wizard) and very very human, yet all the things that go bump in the night stay the hell out of Chicago because of his reputation.
