The Highlander is a crossover, not an SUV. It's closer to a tall station wagon or a minivan than the 4Runner.
It's a decent crossover though....which means that it is impressive in a field that offers lower towing capacity than real SUVs, less passenger volume than minivans, and similar crappy fuel economy and high sticker prices as larger trucks.
