Didnt stay at Playa Del Carmen, but just up the road at a resort.
Go to Tulum. Get a tour guide in the little square next to the tram when you get there. It was pretty cheap for a group of us and the guy was friendly and helpful. Short tour but he didn't push us on anything. Just a tour guide.
We did Xplor. Its owned by the same people as Xcaret but it was a little more our style than Xcaret from what we saw online. Lots of ziplining and some kind of fun driving trails, etc. We enjoyed it.
