Running on contact places more pressure on the defense. The runner has just two jobs, run fast and avoid the tag.There is no time lost mentally debating, just go.
The defense has to 1. catch the ball, 2. get it out of his glove, 3. line himself up to make the throw, 4. make the throw in the right spot and fast enough, 5. the catcher has to catch the ball and 6. make the tag.
It forces the other guy(s) to make a play. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. I like the odds for the runner.
