This is the correct answer. I had an 87YJ with 4.2 (POS) and a 2002 TJ with a 4.0. There were a lot of guys in the clubs that went with the cheaper 4 banger to modify up for trail use primary/only. 4 cylinders with the right gearing in the diffs can move 33 or 35 inch tires. 4:1 transfer case added and you can crawl most anything.
If you are going for mall rated, get the extra 2 cylinders.
Make sure you get one with the Dana 44 rear no matter what you get.
