Instead, it indeed appears to have become a "respect" issue and was handled WITH damage to the program.

Without getting into any discussion on the quality of Chavis' defenses (as it is really irrelevant to the "Miles Clause" in the contract) I don't think Alleva screwed up by not guaranteeing Chavis a position if and when Miles leaves the program. It is not a given that an incoming coach would want Chavis on his staff, and if you want to attract a top coach in this situation (which I do) then he needs to have control over his staff when he comes in.

Imagine the following scenario

- Alleva guarantees Chavis the next 3 years with a buyout equal to his salary to keep Chavis from A&M around Thanksgiving
- Miles goes to Michigan instead of Harbaugh at the end of the season
- LSU gets to the final stages of negotiating a deal with Harbaugh that fall apart because he doesn't want Chavis on his staff - or he resents that decision being made for him prior to him being contacted - a week or two before NSD

The next coach doesn't have to be Harbaugh, I just chose that name because he was the hot coach for the this cycle. As shortsighted as Alleva is being accused of acting, his actions may be based on the fact that he doesn't want to restrict his candidates to replace Miles to only those who are willing to accept Miles' staff as part of the deal.
