A couple more things... summer is going to be very hot and more touristy than other times in Rome. Moreover, the cobblestones are murder on the feet (wear very comfortable shoes).
If at all possible, try to figure out the bus system and plan out which busses you'll take. Your feet will thank you.
Also, even if it's hot, some dress slacks and a nice shirt go a long way in Italy. When I was there, I would usually follow local custom and take a nap from 3-6, change into nice clothes, and get to know the locals.

Did our honeymoon in Italy and we did a food tour in Rome. It was one of the most fun things we did over the 10 days.
