It's really an incredible way to help out a recruits family.
A&M only promoted it prior to the kid hijacking it and filing for the trademark. Then they didn't fight it. Did you expect A&M to actually fight the trademark of prospective recruit?
IMO, this is much ado about nothing. It would only be an issue if they continued using the hashtag to promote it.

but they continued to promote it after he filed for the trademark application. And, if TAMU wanted to, they could still oppose the mark.
IMO, I don't really care. The mark really isn't worth much without that TAMU logo next to it and the school pushing it.
