Well that's a good sign. Could just be a bulging disc vs a ruptured one. Very likely to recover if so but I would start a fund for precaution just in case he were to rupture it sometime in the future . Quicker you get to surgery the better and usually looking about 3-4k. Keep him rested for 4 weeks or so. No matter how good he feels. Still has a delicate injury. Keep on NSAIDs rather than steroids.

Luckily our little guy broke his spine and it fused back together perfectly. The vet said he would always have issues with it and he does.
The cold weather is a real burden on him and he sometimes has trouble controlling when he pees.
We got him a belly band aka diaper so he doesn't piss all over the house and just make sure he is as happy as he can be while he is still kicking.
I'm sure the vet has told you but watch the pups weight, that can make the problem worse.
