He isn't telling them that they all have a shot at the majors. In fact, he tells them that their chances of actually playing in "the show" are a million to one. He wants them to be the best ball players that they can be and lets them know that it takes hard work. One of his sayings is "if you're not doing something every day to make yourself a better ball player, someone else is".

And that is very true but there are guys with crazy genetics doing the same thing which is why saying something like "if I can do it anyone can" . I think competitive sports are great for kids and making them believe they can do anything is something a coach should do but the truth is you need to have crazy genetics and most people need the work ethic to go with it.
