So I was browsing a new website and I came across this article

[link=(metro.co.uk/2014/01/30/nerd-clothing-line-pulled-by-tesco-after-mothers-campaign-4284392)]metro.co.uk/2014/01/30/nerd-clothing-line-pulled-by-tesco-after-mothers-campaign-4284392[/link]

Basically the article is about the shopping centre, Tesco, they decided to sell a new line of clothes for people which had pictures of cartoon style animals that were wearing glasses which also had the words geek and nerd written underneath them. The woman, who was the mother to a child who was born with cataracts which causes him to wear really thick glasses, complained to the people at Tesco to get the clothes taken off the shelves because it would lead to her son being bullied in later life, they soon took them off the market.

This is such a win for glasses wearers around the world me included, I have been wearing glasses since I was roughly about five or six years old and I am now currently twenty two and I still wear them; I wear them because I see double vision which is not as cool as it might sound. Society annoys me, because in recent years glasses have become really fashionable and ‘sexy’, it annoys me to an extent that I have to vent my frustration on a stress ball. For about sixteen years I have been disrespected by being called cock eyed or four eyes by strangers, and sometimes friends, and now for a reason they are a fashion statement and people view glasses as ‘sexy’?

In my opinion there is nothing sexy about glasses, I personally think that models who wear them in photo shoots look 100% better without the glasses on. In a way it is sort of exploitation. For example some people are in a worse position than me and they literally cannot see anything without the aid of wearing glasses, and if they are like me they would do anything to have perfect eye sight (sometimes laser eye surgery isn’t always a success) but yet there are these people who have perfect vision and decide they would look better with a pair of glasses on. Poor vision could be classed as a disability so I don’t understand why people with perfect vision want to wear glasses, it would be like someone with perfectly working legs wanting to ride and be pushed everywhere in a wheel chair.

It also annoys me when I see celebrities, posting pictures on their instargram with a pair of glasses one, Selena Gomez for example, and then she will tag it as something like #Selfie, #SexyNerd and then her fans or just people who think she is pretty, will comment on her picture and say something like, “I love nerds, they’re so sexy!” NO. SHUT UP. For one she is not a nerd, she is just a pretty girl wearing glasses and two she is in no way a nerd. If she was a nerd she wouldn’t get a decent boyfriend, she would sit in the house playing League of Legends or Dungeons and Dragons and she would have thousands upon thousands of comic books. She would also not have any confidence to do half the things that she does in the media, and also half the nation wouldn’t find her gorgeous. It just really annoys me.

But in no way do glasses make people nerds, I have some friends who are shy around girls, never go out and just sit in their room reading comic books but he doesn’t wear glasses, I have no idea why people think that glasses are a symbolisation for: nerds, geeks and freaks, freaks is the worse one. It’s the same when there Is a fancy dress party, some girl will go dressed up as a ‘sexy, nerdy school girl’ and she will always have a pair of glasses on with the tape around the bridge of the glasses symbolising that they have been beaten up, because, they are a nerd…!
