Michigan's decline has killed it.

When I was younger (late 90s early 2000s) I always watched it. 2006 game was huge.

Just like the Iron Bowl in the 2000s. If Michigan returns to prominence it will be a big deal again.

This.

I used to watch it as a kid, and games like the Charles Woodson game in 1997 and the 2006 game were awesome.

However, I'd add that it's not just Michigan's decline that destroyed national interest, but also the decline of the Big Ten in general. The Michigan-OSU game started losing national appeal as soon as the Big Ten started declining rapidly.

Also, didn't they used to play this game a week before the end of the regular season? I swear they used to play it the week before all the other conferences ended their regular seasons with the rivalry games.

12 game season and conference championship games 2 weeks after the end of the B1G season ended that. The Game was always the Saturday before Thanksgiving for a long time. Ohio State had a seven week stretch between The Game and their bowl game a couple of years. That's way too long off between games and the rust showed.
