Midland, Texas had a new 59 story mixed use tower planned, but investors scrapped it when the city told them they wouldn't give them any concessions for it.
And about falling behind in architecture...AT&T stadium in Arlington has the world's largest column-free interior. Like was said earlier in the thread; girth, not length. Look at the class of stadiums and domes just opened, being built or soon to begin construction in America. The tech going into these construction projects is insane.
