Yes it really is. It goes back to the way high school offenses are run. They are so simple that QBs need to be re taught how to play QB when they get to college.
How many times have we heard a QB is having difficulty taking the snap from under center because he never had to do it in high school.

It really is complex. The qb must be able to read the defensive fronts and check to the correct play. Let's not forget that defenses often "stem" which means they line up in one front, then shift before the ball is snapped. I got a sneak peak at LSU's playbook and it clearly states that the QB has to identify the front, mike linebacker, secondary coverage, and then check to the run play with the least number of defenders. For example, when LSU lines up in a two tight ends, two running back set, the Qb has to find the side of the field with only 5 defenders over 3 blockers as opposed to the side with 6 defenders over 3 blockers. Running into the side with only 5 defenders gives us a chance at a 2 yard gain, as opposed to just hoping to get back to the line of scrimmage on the other side.
