the 60s were absolutely a positive for society; even with all the retardedness that came with them, a lot of forward-thinking that was so sorely needed after the MUCH WORSE 50s also took place.

The thing about societal evolution I would emphasize is this: if you're going to get better and push forward, you have to be given the opportunity and the freedom to frick up. You'll do some really stupid things along the way, but you'll also do some great ones.

The hope is that the good stuff sticks and the stupid stuff is soon recognized for what it is, and falls away harmlessly.

The 60s were a regrettably necessary time period in American history, and I firmly believe that American society is better for it having happened the way it did.

ETA: The time period looks awful to younger people today, and I agree with this assessment. It was a divisive, turbulent time and, I am quite sure, NO fun to go through for many people no matter where your head was at. Think of it as a "trial by fire" period for America, which IMO we passed on through.
