The situation you described specifically said that a left turn would involve only crossing 2 lanes. It actually involves crossing 4 lanes (2 in each direction) plus a turning lane in each direction, so 5 lanes total.

You're just fricking with me, right? 
My point is you only need to make it safely to the center turn lane, and then from there can get into the direction you want to travel when possible. Without a center turn lane, you have to worry about the first two lanes as well as at least one lane of the direction you want to go.
