I definitely understand that. Just for information's sake, I'm a brown belt in bjj (no gi) and have been training in mma for 9 years.
Wierd thing is, I'm JUST now getting into the gi.
Do you know if there are any stories about how good he was in the grappling game?

Never heard of anyone belted in no gi
I've never read anything of how good he was, or wasn't. Only him training. I did read something about him saying he didn't think grappling could be a spectator sport because of the slow pace
Judging by crowd reactions in Mma events when the fight hits the ground I would say he was right for the most part
