I posted this exact same thing on my FB the day I saw that stupid billboard. Somebody needs to hire a marketing firm. It was put up by a NPO with NPO funds. Those run on a skeleton budget made up of donations and grants. Complete waste of funding. Because I'd wager that not one single person has been saved from a life of servitude by that billboard. Are we talking about it? Yep. And so now what? Are we all going to be on the lookout for sex slaves in the hood? No. Awareness does nothing but ease the collective's need for a narcissistic sense of involvement. It's intended to raise our ire and call us to action. But, that rarely happens, especially a) with things that people are already aware of and b) with things that don't personally affect the intended audience. I've volunteered for years for a certain organization. Because I am passionate about the issue I serve because I am personally affected and hope to change things in some small way. I don't, however, have anything to do with walks, fundraisers, and whatnot. I''m very wary of many NPOs and would like to see your budget and mission statement before I go throwing time and funds at you. Not because I don't think they're on the up and up, but because 9/10 funds are wasted in ways like this that will make absolutely zero impact for the cause.
