Perhaps the difference between the artificial is how they are worn. If it is a REAL cowbell, it should either be worn around the neck, used tastefully with other drums, or mounted atop a bass drum. The real enigma with them, though, it is difficult to hold a cowbell with a hoof...

The cowbells are only allowed at Mississippi State home games. They are prohibited by the SEC at any other SEC stadium. Some bowl games will allow them at their option.
The rule was clarified in May 2014: "MSU fans still won't be allowed to bring or ring a cowbell in an opponent's stadium."
