To be fair, a lot of places out west are good in this regard. Reno is actually really great for outdoors stuff. I have a friend that moved to Folsom, CA to work for Intel and it seems like an outdoorsman's paradise from what I can tell.

I'll put it to you this way. The dude is politically/fiscally conservative and enjoyed hunting, so he was real reluctant about moving to Folsom from Louisiana. 3 years later he says it was the best decision he ever made.
