What the others have said:
1) Make sure you know which airport you're flying out of. A lot of Ryan Air flights leave from some out of the way places (Paris Beauvais is basically a barn about 60 miles away). Sometimes the savings still make it worth an extra bus fare, sometimes they don't.
2) Also, Ryanair is really best for light backpackers who can print things ahead of time (like I was when I was travelling through Europe). The hidden fees for not following rules can really kill.
Otherwise, I've had worse experiences with airlines in the US.
My favorite airline in Europe is Easyjet, though. It was a lifesaver throughout Europe.
