The part of 6th St that is famous is between I35 and Congress. 6th st has some lofts above the bars. I've stayed in one before and it worked out well.

Honestly, there are much better places to go, such as 6th st east of I35, Rainey St, South Congress, Red River (between 6th and 11th), etc.

Also, I would not recommend staying on lake Travis. It is a good 30 min commute to downtown. It is worth seeing though. If you can find a place on lake austin, that would be much closer.

You could also try somewhere along the train route. You could get a house and just take the train to downtown. It drops you off a couple blocks from 6th.
