Yeah, here's some books from the ARRL to check out. The Beginners book tells about it, but the License Manual is all you really need to pass the first test. Total of 3 tests to get all the way to the top, each one gives you more privileges.

I know some local ham radio operators help share info in support of the Tour du Teche kayak race on Bayou Teche. Not sure why, but they've been in involved since the first year of the race.
