Random events that occur on each planet that upon completion you will receive reputation points, vanguard marks, glimmer (I think) and either ascendant shards or ascendant energy (both of which are needed to upgrade legendary items). Ascendant shards are used to upgrade legendary/exotic armor where as ascendant energy is used to upgrade legendary/exotic weapons.
