I think it was a true turning point for coverage of celeb death, and celebrity in general. Most of the media did not realize how significant he was to so many people. Cronkite infamously did not even lead off the CBS Evening News with the story. CBS would remember 3 years later, and led with the death of John Lennon.

Same here. I was very young but I remember all the females in my family crying like someone they knew had just died. It was really huge. Lennon was huge but it didn't affect people on a personal level like Elvis did.
